We live in the age of ideas. Companies thrive on brilliant ideas and fail for lack of them. Successful companies like Microsoft, Walmart, Apple, Honda became successful not because their founding families were wealthy and high social status, but because they had ideas behind them.

Imagine what your life could be like if you multiplied the quality and quantity of your business ideas. You could start a business that will change the world. You could change the lives of millions and leave a mark on history. You could make every day fun and exciting.

In 1968, George Land and Beat Yarman asked 1,600 five-year-olds to take the Creativity Test, which is used by NASA to assess the creativity of engineers and scientists. They later offered the same test to children aged 10 to 15. The results obtained showed that at the age of five, 98% of children discover brilliant Creative skills, at the age of ten - 30%, and at the age of 15 - only 10%. Creative thinking versus analytical

Activate the speed of your thinking

Scientists have conducted numerous studies comparing the work of the right (subconscious) and left (conscious) hemispheres of the brain. The results confirmed that our creative right brain is at least 2 million times faster than our analytical left brain, which is responsible for judgment, self-control and internal dialogue. It makes sure that we weigh everything we want to say and evaluate everything we want to do. The right hemisphere is responsible for generating new creative ideas.

Charles Limb conducted a study at Johns Hopkins University in which jazz and rap musicians were asked to perform an impromptu composition. While they played, Charles measured the activity of different parts of the brain. During improvisation, the hemisphere responsible for analytical thinking and judgment showed much less activity.

The right hemisphere is responsible for everything related to creative activity and can process a huge amount of information in a few seconds. Consciousness not only does not help us generate business ideas, but actually prevents the subconscious mind from doing this work, blocking it. To be world-class at generating business ideas, you must learn to turn off your analytical brain and put your subconscious mind to work.

Avoid any activity that activates the left brain. When thinking about a problem, remember the three rules: no judgment, no criticism, no internal monologues.

So, today we will talk about 10 basic methods for generating new business ideas.

Brainstorming is a great way to get new ideas

Brainstorming is something that is practiced by many companies, large and small. No matter what type of business you are in or planning to do, brainstorming can always come up with new ideas, interesting concepts and solutions to problems.
This method was developed by Alex Osborne. The main idea is that the brainstorming participants discuss the question posed. First, a question is asked, then everyone offers their own solution, saying a few phrases. Ideas should be different, it is desirable to express everything that comes to mind, not to be afraid. Even if the solution seems fantastic, then speak up. Thus, collective thinking goes on, the creative process is stimulated. It happened in my team that from the beginning everything goes hard, but then someone said one idea, another one picked it up, a third one and off it went. Idea after idea, solution after solution, out of hundreds of proposals made, we are sure to find a couple of sensible ones. Then they should be written down and discussed in more detail.
Brainstorming has three stages:
Formulation of the problem. Decide what you will discuss, clearly formulate the task.
Idea generation. The most important and creative part of brainstorming. Here you need to follow certain rules: do not limit ideas, say everything; in no case criticize the idea of ​​another participant in the assault; the most unusual ideas welcome; combine and compose as much as possible what has been said.
Grouping and highlighting the most interesting ideas. Often this stage is forgotten, but it is it that allows you to select the best and most worthy of the hundreds of ideas said.
I think you have figured out what brainstorming is. I am sure that the first few times will be difficult, but over time you will get used to it and will be able to generate very interesting and useful ideas.

New Business Ideas: The Six Hats Method

This method of generating new business ideas, and all ideas in general, belongs to Edward de Bono. During the creative process, a person must wear six different hats. Each has its own specific color, which is responsible for a particular function. So, wearing a white hat, you must impartially check all the numbers and facts, trying on a black one, you need to look for all the negative features and risks this business, in yellow - to analyze all the advantages of this case, in green to generate more new ideas for the development of the project, and in red you can afford to express yourself emotionally about the idea presented. And the last, blue hat - in it you should take stock of all the work done.
A very interesting method that turns into a game, but at the same time is able to stimulate the thinking process in an incredible way and increase the ability to generate new business ideas.

Mind map method

This method of generating new business ideas is called "mind maps". Its creator is Tony Buzan. The main idea is that the whole process of thinking and creativity is closely related to human memory. It is she who needs to be developed, stimulated, try to excite somehow. Tony Buzan suggests taking a large piece of paper, writing an idea in the center, the key concept from which you need to start, and then creating branches on which to write all the associations that arise. Thus, you have a certain map, consisting of many associations. All of them will be interconnected by a key concept. This will allow you to turn on the creative process of thinking, create a whole grid of associative concepts from which you can derive interesting and new ideas.

New business ideas: the synectics method

Now this is a really real method that I have used in my practice several times. I wouldn't say it's simple, but it's pretty effective. Understood the algorithm of work, you can easily generate new business ideas, or solve tasks.
So, synectics - the main source of new ideas here is the search for analogies. Author this method is William Gordon. What do we have to do? First, select an object, and draw a table for its analogies. In the first column we indicate direct analogies, in the second - indirect ones, and then you need to compare the goal, direct and indirect analogy.
Is it hard to understand the first time? I was also confused, so I will give a simple example.
Object - pencil

Indirect analogy (negation of a straight line) - flat pencil

New business ideas: focal object method


The focal object method is a rather interesting way to generate new business ideas. Its author is Charles Whiting, who notes that this way is designed to combine the features of different objects in one whole, and thereby bring out a new object that is more interesting for people.
For example: we take a holiday as a basis New Year. There are many associations, but oranges, gifts, sparklers and candles that my parents put on the table immediately come to my mind. The idea is that you can add frayed sparklers to the candle wax, and we get an interesting candle that will sparkle. The example is simple, but I think that it allowed you to understand how it works. The method of focal objects is used everywhere - in engineering, in mechanical engineering, in industry. Even take the technology from Apple - all new gadgets (iPhone, iPad) are the generation of various devices, the properties of which were combined into one and finalized.

Morphological analysis

This method was proposed by Fritz Zwicke. To be honest, I did not fully understand it, I tried several times to generate new ideas in this way, but it did not work. Perhaps I gravitate towards other methods, but in my article I could not get around this side.
So, the method of morphological analysis lies in the fact that the object under study must be decomposed into components, among which it is necessary to choose the most important and essential. Further, they need to be changed by various methods and try to assemble, as a result, having received a different, qualitatively new object.

Method of indirect strategies

This method of generating new ideas is quite funny. Personally, I used it several times, to say that the idea came ingenious would not be true. Perhaps due to the fact that I perceived everything as a game, I wanted to test the method of indirect strategies for effectiveness more than to get some kind of final result.
Indirect strategies were developed by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt. The bottom line is that you give certain instructions to yourself, but you don’t know in advance what you will have to do and where the result of following this or that instruction will lead.
