Gadget manufacturers

JCB Bamford Excavators, better known as JCB, is an English multinational corporation based in Rochester, Staffordshire. It specializes in the production of technological equipment for construction, demolition and agriculture. It is the 3rd manufacturer of construction equipment in the world. The company produces over three hundred types of machines, including those for agricultural work. It has over twenty production facilities in European, American and Asian countries, and its products are sold in more than one hundred and fifty countries. The product range also includes mobile devices.

JCB was founded in 1945. Its founder was a man named Joseph Cyril Bamford, after whom it was named (Joseph's initials in English can be read as "G.C.B."). In addition, in the United Kingdom, this abbreviation was often used colloquially as a common name for excavators, and was later included in one of the most famous academic dictionaries. in English, although at that time it was already a trademark.

British businessman Joseph Bamford was born in June 1916 to a Catholic Staffordshire family that owned Bamfords, their own agricultural engineering business. His great-grandfather founded his own business, which by 1881 employed 50 men, 10 boys and 3 women. Bamfords IFM became one of the main suppliers of agricultural machinery, which was exported to countries around the world. Eventually, in 1986, she stopped trading.

After graduating from college, Joseph went to work for a company in Coventry that later became one of the largest machine tool manufacturers in the country. Soon Bamford was already representing his organization in Ghana. In 1938 he returned home to join the family firm, but already in 1941 he was drafted into the Air Force just during the Second World War.

Shortly after working in logistics and supply, Joseph traveled to the African city of Gold Coast to help set up a staging post for US Air Force planes that were being ferried to the Middle East.

Upon returning home in 1944, Bamford initially worked for English Electric, designing electrical welding equipment in Stafford. His brief involvement in the family business proved unsatisfactory, and his uncle Henry advised him to leave, adding that Joe had "a little future ahead of him."

In October 1945, Joseph rented a garage 3.7 by 4.6 meters for 30 shillings, that is, 1.50 pounds per week. Using a used welding machine, which was purchased at an incredibly low price from English Electric, he was able to build an agricultural trailer. On the day his first son was born, he sold a trailer for forty-five pounds, as well as a cart.

Since the entrepreneur was not interested in blindly competing with other businesses, his philosophy was:

"Focus on what you do best, be innovative, and re-invest in product development and the latest manufacturing technologies."

It is known that the British businessman did not smoke and was a teetotaler, as well as a man so economical that his wife sewed her own curtains. He worked every day from 9 am to 11 pm. He saw his role in life in the same way as his deeply religious predecessors imagined it.

Bamford has managed to create an effective marketing house, a manufacturing center, as well as virtual "homes" for his employees. He did not see any need for unions, but at the same time he thought of surrounding the production area with 40 square kilometers of landscaped gardens, where his company's employees could fish, hunt and swim. In addition, Bamford paid his employees more than fair wages, which he regularly raised.

He also took care of the annual awards based on individual achievements. In 1967, Joseph gave them personal checks totaling £250,000. In return, he received unprecedented flexibility. work force. Average worker his organization in the 70s and early 80s was seven times more productive than any other British-made employee.

In 1948, only 6 people worked for Joe's firm. Together they created the first hydraulic trailer in Europe. Two years later, JCB moved into an old cheese factory in Rochester. Then its staff was still estimated at six employees. Twelve months later, Joseph decided to use the yellow color scheme for his products. In the early 1950s, the first backhoe loader was produced.

At the same time, the brand logo also appeared for the first time, which was developed by Derby Media and advertising designer Leslie Smith. In the second half of the 50s, the company launched the "hydra-digga" system. It was both an excavator and a loader - a versatile machine that could be used in construction as well as in agricultural work.

In the early 60s, the company's hydraulic tractors were introduced to the North American market, where they were successful. This helped the brand to become a world leader, and it holds a leading position in the 21st century. By 1964, over 3,000 hydra-digga units had been sold. The following year, the company produced the first 360-degree excavator.

In the late 70s, the Loadall was introduced. The following year, the company opened an Indian division. In 1991, the company created a joint venture for the production of excavators with the Japanese Sumitomo, which ended in 1998. Three years later, the Brazilian plant opened.

The release of the first engine of the company began in 2004. Vibromax was soon bought. In 2005, a Chinese factory was opened. By 2006, the company had over 4,000 employees, twice as many as it was in 1975.

During the economic downturn, the firm had to say goodbye to a couple of thousand employees, but in 2010 it was announced that it was recruiting 200 new employees.

By the mid-2000s, she already had eighteen factories in Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia and so on. The company's staff on four continents totaled about 7,000 people. It has sold its products to over a hundred countries. The assortment included over three hundred items.

The company's headquarters in Rochester is also a site for the production of excavators and loaders. Three more factories are located in the neighborhood in Cheadle, one in North Wales, and so on.

In July 2013, a dedicated logistics center was opened in Newcastle-under-Lyme. This facility has become the central hub for distributing components to production facilities. In December of the same year, it was announced that the Rugeley Cab Systems plant would move to a new facility in Uttoxeter. The investment will be accompanied by the expansion of manufacturing sites in Rochester and Chile by 2018. At the same time, JCB continues to own the German company Vibromax.

The company dominates the Indian construction equipment market. Thus, three out of four building products sold in India are produced by JBC. In 2001, the revenue of the Indian division amounted to $75 million, and in 2012-2013 - $1 billion, that is, it increased more than twelve times. Indian operations account for 17.5% of the British company's total revenue.

Many of the machines manufactured by JCB are variants of the backhoe loader, including tracked and wheeled construction vehicles, miniature and large versions, and other models of equipment for carrying and moving items, such as forklifts and telehandlers for transporting materials to upper floors. In addition, Gisibi manufactures loading wheeled excavators and articulated haulers.

Other construction equipment includes wheel loaders and tractors. Industrial and agricultural wheel loaders ranging from six-ton compacts to twenty-five-ton large machines use a mixture of four- and six-cylinder diesel engines. When it comes to tractors, the company made a name for itself by producing one of the first such machines that was able to move quickly on the roads.

The most famous wheeled tractor is the JCB Fastrac. It was released in 1990. Prior to this machine, such equipment had a fixed height, which was inconvenient for agricultural equipment, and also moved too slowly along the roads. Depending on the specific model, the tractor could travel at speeds from 50 to 75 kilometers per hour. After launch, the machine was featured on a BBC TV show, and a few years later became Jeremy Clarkson's tractor on Top Gear.

Since 2005, the company has been manufacturing a wide range of compact tractors that are designed for site maintenance, as well as for gardening and light agricultural work. It also manufactures a wide range of military vehicles.

In April 2006, it was announced that JCB was developing a diesel vehicle called the Dieselmax. It was powered by two modified 444 diesel power plants using a two-stage turbocharger. In August of the same year, the car set a diesel engine speed record (529 kilometers per hour). Andy Green was driving. The next day, a new record was set, this time over 563 kilometers per hour.

JCB also launches its own range of rugged mobile phones and smartphones aimed at the construction workforce. For the design of these devices and competent marketing, she was awarded in 2010. So, the most famous mobile device of the company is the Pro-Talk model. This device has a 2.2-inch QVGA touch screen, a 2-megapixel camera module, GPS and dual SIM support.

However, its most important feature is that it is reliably protected. Such a device has several elements of a smartphone, but it still remains, first of all, affordable. mobile phone with a simple menu without the possibility of using Email or download applications. However, it's hard to deny the convenience of using two SIM cards at the same time. In addition, the device demonstrates an excellent signal.

It doesn't need to be charged too often as the battery life is also excellent. This is partly due to the 1800 mAh battery. One charge should be enough for three to four days of moderate use, and without navigation - more than a week. We add that the phone is certified in accordance with the IP67 standard. It is reliably protected from dust and dirt, and can also be completely immersed in water for at least half an hour.

The Sitemaster 2 has the same impressive IP67 rating. This device is for those who want to replace their current phone, but do not want to buy a smartphone. It is a solid solution that can easily cope with basic tasks, namely, receiving and making calls, receiving and sending text messages, as well as taking pictures with a 2-megapixel camera (the picture can be attached to the sent message).

It is a rugged, dust- and water-resistant mobile device that is also capable of withstanding one ton of pressure and a 2-meter drop. The scope of delivery includes a two-year warranty, which confirms the cost-effectiveness of the phone. There are FM-radio, Bluetooth module and a slot for a memory card.

Another popular model of a similar series is the Sitemaster 3G. The device is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera and Bluetooth interface support. Like other mobile devices of the company, it was specially created for work in difficult conditions, and therefore it is reliably protected, being certified according to the IP54 standard. The manufacturer also provides a two-year warranty on it.

JCB Products

History of JCB

The company is based in the UK. The company was founded in 1945 by Joseph Cyril Bamford. Since its inception, the company has been engaged in the production of construction equipment. JCB currently has twenty-two plants around the world. The main activity at the moment is the production construction machinery:

  • Backhoe loaders
  • Crawler excavators
  • Wheel excavators
  • Crawler mini excavators
  • Telehandlers
  • Front loaders
  • Skid steer loaders
  • Rollers (tandem rollers, soil rollers, compaction equipment)
  • Diesel generators
  • Attachments for special equipment

Backhoe loader

One of the popular and recognizable types of special equipment on the Russian market is backhoe loader models: JCB 3CX and JCB 4CX.

In general, the model range of the company is:

  • Excavator loader JCB1
  • Excavator loader JCB 3CX
  • Backhoe loader JCB 3CX ECO
  • Excavator loader JCB 3CX Super
  • Backhoe loader JCB 4CX
  • Excavator loader JCB 5 CX

The main difference in the JCB model range is:

  • First, the operating weight - in other words, this is the weight of the machine itself.
Accordingly, the greater the weight of special equipment, the larger its dimensions, the more powerful the engine, and so on, this gives greater opportunities for the operation of equipment.
  • The second parameter is the loading capacity - this parameter makes it possible, due to the front bucket, to quickly transfer bulk materials such as snow, sand, gravel and construction debris, and also makes it possible to transfer various loads, for example, at a construction site, a reinforcement structure for installing it then into the formwork.
  • The third main parameter is the maximum digging depth

Below is an example of the parameters of the models.

Each base model is endowed with a number of features and options, for example, the JCB 3CX ECO - the engine is endowed with the function of adapting to lower fuel quality, or the built-in coffee maker in the cabin of the JCB 5 backhoe loader. True, all these options can be put on any JCB backhoe loader models for extra money .

In general, in general, a backhoe loader is a universal special equipment, since thanks to the basic attachments of this special equipment, you can dig, carry and load, fill holes and trenches like a bulldozer.

You can also expand the capabilities of the excavator loader thanks to attachments. Attached equipment allows you to carry out work on city street cleaning, dismantling buildings, landscaping and other works.

Lineup of crawler excavators

JS130 JS205 JS260 JZ140
JS160 JS220 JS305
JS180 JS235 JS330
JS190 JS240 JS360

The difference among models is mainly engine power and weight. crawler excavator. The higher these indicators, the wider the range of tasks of the excavator. It is also important to take into account the weight of the excavator for transporting it on a tractor with a trawl.

JCB Excavator Brief

My demo started from the cab of the excavator. The first impression was that the cab was spacious with good visibility, the pedals were large, the control levers were located conveniently for the operator. When the engine was running, there was no loud noise or strong vibration in the cab. Then they began to advise me on the technical part of the excavator. The crawler excavator engine is made for any climatic conditions under heat and frost, this is an important point for using it in our country. The engine does not deteriorate during long-term feeding with low-quality fuel. Centralized arrangement of filters is convenient for maintenance technology. And many other benefits and innovations that I was told about this technique.

As for innovations, I would like to add that JCB has developed a remote control for excavators, which is very convenient, for example, when dismantling in dangerous places for humans or where there is a risk of equipment tipping over during construction work.

The excavator is also equipped with software for remote control of the machine, this system provides a report on the working condition of the equipment and warns of a scheduled technical inspection to replace engine and hydraulic oils.

telescopic loader

It is a lifting vehicle, the main use of which is the movement of loose and non-bulk materials by the front bucket or forks, but the loader can lift and load these materials to high places, thanks to the retractable telescopic boom.

An example of a telehandler application: loading grain into an elevator or loading sand into silos.

The reach of the boom reaches from 6 to 20 meters, and the load capacity is from 2.8 tons to 5 tons.

One of the directions of JCB is the safety of the driver and equipment, for this purpose, JCB has installed indicators on telehandlers, these indicators determine the progressive load, which further prevents the equipment from being overloaded and the possibility of its tipping over. All this information is displayed on the monitor screen and then the program blocks the boom output.

In general, a telescopic loader can replace the work of many types of special equipment, such as a front loader, aerial platform, truck crane.

Its main advantages and characteristics among other analogues.

A large range of wheeled and tracked mini loaders with a load capacity of 600 to 1500 kg.

JCB construction and industrial equipment is becoming more and more widespread in various sectors of the economy in Russia. A special place in the product line under this brand is occupied by universal backhoe loaders. A bright representative is the JCB 3CX. Many in Russia have already been able to appreciate this backhoe loader. Tractors of the “branded” yellow color have already become very “familiar” at large and small construction sites and are very recognizable. A detailed review of this popular model is in this publication.

Backhoe loaders under the JCB 3CX label have been produced since 1977, and are constantly being modified in accordance with new technologies and current advances in the field of mechanical engineering. In honor of the 70th anniversary of JCB, a limited "Platinum Series" ("Platinum Edition") of tractors of this brand, painted in yellow-red (like the first "JCB 3CX", in 1977), was released. The company proudly emphasizes that over the past decades, the JCB 3CX has been and remains the most common backhoe loader worldwide.

Backhoe loader "JCB 3CX" modification "Super" (with front and rear wheels of equal size).

The secret of the popularity of "JCB 3CX" lies, in many ways, in its versatility and versatility. It is quite compact and maneuverable, all-wheel drive, and is successfully used in almost any conditions: on construction sites of various levels, on rough terrain away from roads, and in urban areas too. Decent cross-country ability and versatility of this model of backhoe loader is guaranteed by large and equal-sized wheels.

The JCB 3CX has two leading steering axles, and the track-to-track mode allows you to turn the front and rear wheels in different directions. Backhoe loader hydraulic hoses perform well even in extreme low or high temperatures, and all components also exhibit excellent resistance to sunlight, chemicals, oil, extreme temperatures and salt.

The JCB 3CX backhoe loader can be used in jobs such as

  • leveling of construction sites;
  • preparation and arrangement of local or temporary roads;
  • earthworks: digging trenches and pits;
  • transportation of goods of considerable mass;
  • a wide range of other landscape and earthmoving works.

The JCB 3CX backhoe loader is able to work stably with absolutely any type of soil; easily processes stones and sand, gravel and coal, and other materials. Due to its high maneuverability, the JCB 3CX can feel calm and confident in tight spaces and cramped, hard-to-reach places. Intuitive control makes it possible to optimize workflows, reducing time and labor costs when working on a variety of objects.

The abbreviation JCB is the initials of the company's founder, Joseph Cyril Bamford. The full name of the company is JCB Excavators Limited. Initially, the company was English, but now it is transnational. It has been in business since 1945, when Bamford began making his own trailers and carts from scrap metal. They were equipped with a simple and convenient manual lifting and self-unloading mechanism, of Joseph's own design, and quickly found their niche in the market.

In 1947, these trailers began to be equipped with a hydraulic lift. Since 1949, a “signature” bright yellow color has appeared - all JCB equipment began to be painted in this tone. And the first backhoe loader under the brand name "JCB" - "MK-1" was built in 1953. From that time to this day, self-propelled backhoe loaders have become the main products of the company.

The trailers that started JCB.

In 1960, the company entered the market of the United States and Canada, in 1979 it began operations in India. Today JCB owns 18 plants. 11 of them are located in Britain, 3 in India, 1 each in the USA, Brazil, Germany and China. JCB equipment is sold and serviced by dealers in 150 countries around the world.

JCB can be called an exemplary family company: when Joseph Bemford retired in the late 70s (he died in 2001, at the age of 84), his son Anthony became the head of the company. And at present, the head of the company is Joseph Bemford Jr. - the grandson of the same enthusiast who started a big business by buying a used welding machine and assembling trailers of our own design.

JCB products have been presented in Russia since 1991. A network of franchised dealerships develops and supports the Anglo-Russian joint venture Lonmady, whose main shareholders are the British. This name is derived from the names of the Lonro company and the Moscow Automobile and Road Institute (MADI), deputy. whose vice-rector Viktor Sokolov became the founder and for 13 years the head of the Russian branch for the sale and maintenance of JCB equipment.

So "JCB 3CX" was in the late 70s.

When developing the JCB 3CX, based on many years of experience, the company's specialists proceeded from the idea of creating the most versatile earthmoving machine that would not only be distinguished by high productivity and efficiency, but would also be attractive in terms of economy and low cost of ownership .

The result is an excavator that is equally suited for cost-effective operation in large fleets and small businesses, private owners and rental fleets.

The JCB 3CX excavator is equipped with a modern and economical Perkins 1004-40T (1004-42) diesel engine. In recent years, the excavator motor began to be produced at the company's own factories and also received the name "JCB". This four-cylinder engine has a displacement of 4.4 liters.

The Perkins / JCB power unit of this brand is distinguished by its ability to deliver peak power (from 79 to 92 horsepower / 68.6 kW) and solid torque (320-400 Nm) even at low engine speeds. This allows you to significantly reduce fuel consumption, without sacrificing performance. Gross power based on SAE J1995 (ISO 14396).

The Perkins 1004-40T (1004-42) engine is equipped with turbocharging, water cooling and engine preheating (at 240 watts) in frosty weather. In the engines of the JCB 3CX excavators of the latest years of production, there is no particulate filter in the exhaust system to reduce the amount of return gases to the engine, the fuel combustion system has been modified to increase power while reducing fuel consumption.

The cylinder diameter is 103 mm; piston stroke - 132 mm. Rated engine speed - 2200 rpm. The fuel tank of the JCB 3CX excavator holds 128 liters of diesel fuel.

The Perkins engine oil filter is equipped with a counterflow valve that keeps the oil in the filter. This design allows you to keep the oil clean longer and reduce motor maintenance costs.

All important engine components are concentrated on one side of the bead, in order to ensure ease of maintenance activities, inspections, and increased productivity. Checking the main working units is easy to carry out daily. It doesn't take long.

The battery is located at the front of the machine and is protected by a grill for safety, easy and quick access. Lubrication and refueling, as well as access to the hydraulic tank located on the side of the loader, can be done from ground level. Everything is thought out for easy and efficient service.

The excavator is equipped with the TORQUE LOCK option, which allows you to reduce fuel consumption by a quarter and increase speed by 10%.

The JCB 3CX gearbox was created exclusively for this technique, taking into account all the specifics of its use. On the backhoe loader, it is possible to install a four-speed manual gearbox (4 forward and 4 reverse speeds) of two types:

  • Powershift ("Powershift") with reverse and one shift lever located on the steering column;
  • Syncroshuttle with electric directional control and torque converter, with particularly smooth gear changes on the go.

The gearboxes of the JCB 3CX backhoe loaders are fully synchronized. The convenient location of the lever of the electric drive for selecting the direction of movement has been thought out - on the steering column. This allows you to change the direction of the tractor without removing your hands from the steering wheel, which reduces interruptions in work.

The operation of the gearbox together with the reverse movement system allows you to change the direction of the tractor without loss in terms of speed. Thanks to the limited slip differential, the torque is automatically distributed to the wheels, depending on the traction conditions.

The torque converter torque ratio is 3.01:1. The forward/reverse switch is servo driven. The speed of movement is: in first gear - 7.3 km / h; in second gear - 11.7 km / h; In third gear - 22 km / h; in fourth gear - 40 km / h.

The hydrostatic front wheel steering uses the main hydraulic pump through the steering priority valve. In the event of an engine failure, the emergency system steering.

The tractor's brakes are disc brakes, self-adjusting with a servo drive, with a small effort on the pedals. The brake system of the backhoe loader provides effective and reliable braking in different situations. Due to the fact that self-adjusting disc brakes work in an oil bath, their properties are retained even after several years of intensive use.

The tires on the JCB 3CX are: Sitemaster 12.5-18-10 (front) and Sitemaster 16.9-28-12 (rear).

Along with the base one, a number of modifications of the JCB 3CX excavator are presented on the domestic market. Their characteristic features: "JCB 3CX Super" - on enlarged front wheels to the size of the rear, "track to track"; "JCB 3CX Sitemaster" - with telescopic handle (fixed handle as standard); "JCB 3CX Contractor" - with a telescopic handle and an increased power engine; "JCB 3CX Potole Master" - with road leveling cutter and pick-up bucket with sweeping brush (special for road maintenance).

Attachments for each of the modifications can be replaced in a short time, depending on the field of application. The front working body can be equipped with forks or a classic or jaw bucket of the required width. The rear working body can be equipped with a telescopic or classic boom, buckets of various types (classic, deep, digging bucket and conical). The carriage of the rear working body allows you to move the mounted installation in any direction.

JCB 3CX Potole Master

In the basic configuration, a jaw bucket with a capacity of just over a cubic meter is mounted in front of the tractor, which allows the excavator to perform the functions of a front loader. An experienced machine operator with such a bucket can load a 7-cc dump truck body in no more than four minutes. The loader arm is reinforced, which allows you to work with serious loads.

The multifunctional front bucket is capable of performing a variety of functions on earthworks: dig, level, load, fill and grab

Behind - a bucket for digging pits and trenches. The productivity of its work is, depending on the depth of digging and working conditions, approximately 80-100 cubic meters per standard eight-hour work shift. If the excavated soil is loaded onto a dump truck in the same shift, then the productivity will be approximately 10% lower.

The telescopic handle increases the working area of the JCB 3CX excavator. Versatility makes it possible to quickly install and effectively use other equipment: a hydraulic hammer, a concrete hopper, soil cutters, brushes and a snow plow.

Thanks to the heat treatment of the boom and handle, with their heating up to 650 degrees, all internal metal stresses that occur during manufacturing and welding are removed. This technology also doubles the life of the booms and significantly reduces the overall weight of the machine.

Precision Machining The JCB 3CX features tight tolerances and accurate pin and bushing placement. Friction welding of hydraulic cylinder eyes provides additional strength.

The bucket is protected from soil spillage during slopes, thanks to a special system for compensating the angle of inclination. And with a 101-degree bucket rotation, vertical trenching can be done quickly and efficiently.

The optional telescopic dipper provides 1.2m more reach and dig depth. This reduces the need to move the tractor and is more economical. The boom and stick have the same length, which allows you to dig as close as possible, next to the tractor. Which also contributes to fuel economy, reducing the need for maneuvering.

Access to the cab of the JCB 3CX backhoe loader is carried out both from the right and from the left side. The cabin has a serious degree of tightness, well dust-, vibration- and soundproofed. Modern air conditioning and heating systems provide a comfortable microclimate and a comfortable working environment.

The noise level in the cabin, according to the manufacturer, does not exceed 73 decibells. The cabin has a 12-volt socket that can be used to charge your phone and use other electrical appliances. The audio-visual warning system monitors battery level, coolant temperature, engine oil pressure, air filter clogging, transmission oil pressure and temperature, and parking brake applied.

Large curved rear-view mirrors and a high position of the driver's seat provide very good visibility. The interior of the cab has well-placed interior lighting for visibility at night.

The workplace of the machine operator is equipped with all necessary adjustments. The steering wheel has a soft, non-slip upholstery. The driver's seat is comfortable, on an adjustable suspension, with armrests. There are a number of convenient and spacious drawers for storing tools and other necessary things.

The glass in the cab of the JCB 3CX is tempered, multi-layered and highly durable. The safety of the machine operator is provided in cases of overturning of the excavator or when heavy loads fall on the tractor cab (The cab frame complies with FOPS / ROPS safety requirements).

Wide cab windows and a high seating position in the cab provide good 360° visibility while the machine is in operation, allowing the operator to view the work process from all sides with virtually no problems.
