Wax seal with your own hands at home. Vintage envelope with wax seal

Sealing wax seal looks interesting and attractive, now it is used as a seal of the master, for decorating envelopes, scrapbooking, etc. If you are a fan of needlework, then you would probably like to have your own seal that you can use as your sign. We have found for you a master class on creating a wax seal at home. This master class is more suitable for already experienced craftswomen who know how to work with material and tools.

Printing from wax, resin or sealing wax is a great decor that can be used for scrapbooking, various types of decoupage, and many other types of needlework. To create it you will need:

  • a piece of wooden stick for printing;
  • device for burning wood;
  • thin sharp knife or clerical;
  • printout;
  • sandpaper;
  • drying oil;
  • pencil.

To create a seal, a wooden stick for a shovel, mop, and so on is suitable, these can be purchased at a regular hardware store or a hardware store. Choose a stick of the diameter that suits you.

Creating a Seal

So, how to make a wax seal at home? Saw off a piece from the stick, about 5-6 cm long. Focus on your hand, measure such a segment that will be convenient to use. Sand it well on all sides. Carefully treat the one on which the seal itself will be.

Make a printout with a simple print image that fits the diameter. Cut it out in a circle, then use a thin knife to cut through the pattern, making a stencil out of the printout.

Mirror the pattern to the surface of the future print so that the print will have the correct impression - from right to left. Paint over the cut holes with a pencil, do it carefully. To prevent the stencil from crawling, it can be fixed with a small piece of tape.

Treat the finished print with drying oil or other special moisture-resistant impregnation for wood. Thoroughly wipe the place with a rag and leave to dry for a day, otherwise it will stain your hands. Here's how to make a wax seal at home. Within a day, you can safely use it.

Test Drive

Now you can try the finished print in action. Take wax, sealing wax or other material suitable for printing (we will discuss alternative printing materials below), spread it with a candle or a lighter, drip in the place where you want to place the seal. Give the material a couple of seconds to set. Dip the print in regular oil, blot the excess with a napkin. Press it evenly and firmly against the material and leave until completely solidified.

When it hardens, carefully remove the seal. If you are afraid to damage it, then swing the signet a little so that it lags behind a little inside. Lifting, you will get a neat, beautiful hand-made print. Wax seal, made at home, is ready.

Imitation

It is worth saying that a wax seal is already a common combination of words, because now any seals made not only from wax, but also from other, alternative materials that perfectly cope with the task assigned to them, are called so. Scrapbooking enthusiasts shared their findings and ideas with us. How to make a seal indistinguishable from wax from improvised material? If you are interested, then let's rather see how to make a wax seal at home from simple materials that are probably lying around among needlework lovers.

hot glue printing

If you are into scrapbooking, then you will definitely have a glue gun and a couple of rods. An excellent material for simulating do-it-yourself wax printing at home. Let's try.

Take the finished seal, you can also use various stamps, coins and buttons. Turn on the glue gun and warm it up, drip the glue of the size you need on the place where you want to print. Do not be stingy, the print should be thick. Allow 20-30 seconds for the product to dry.

Attach a stamp, coin or seal, let dry. After removing the coin, the print can be painted with acrylic paints or from a spray can. You can also use colored glue sticks.

Printing from wax crayons

And here is another way to make a wax seal at home. Wax pencils are weaker than sealing wax, but they are an excellent alternative and much better than glue, because they do not need to be painted.

Remove the wrapper from the wax pencil and insert into the gun. You can also melt it with a lighter or candle, but a glue gun will make it much neater. One disadvantage of this method is that the gun will not be suitable for glue, but it can be further used for wax.

After making a small drop in the right place, let the wax harden a bit. Also attach any stamp. When dry, you will have a great print.

In the same way, you can melt an ordinary colored candle.

Mass printing for modeling

Another material that can be used to create a cool seal is modeling mass. All you need is to roll out a small, even pancake from the mass, attach a stamp or a coin, pressing it down well. And then bake in the oven according to the instructions on the package with the mass. The print is strong and durable. It is perfect for decorating various products.

This is how easy it is to create a really interesting element for decoration. Create with pleasure!

Wax seal is always associated with letters and messages, with something romantic and vintage. This decorative element is actively used today in creativity and needlework. Such a seal is often decorated with invitations. It will not be difficult for lovers of tinkering to make a wax seal with their own hands.
For the manufacturing process, it is necessary to prepare certain tools and materials: a bar or stick made of wood, adhesive tape, a simple pencil, a sharp and thin knife, a special device for burning, sandpaper, a stencil, vegetable oil, dye (stain or drying oil is suitable), sealing wax or wax , lighter and napkins.
Now let's find out in detail how to make a wax seal.
Step one. Take a pre-prepared wooden block and proceed to the grinding process. The surface where the print will be located should be as smooth as possible.
Step two. On the stencil, with a sharp and thin knife, we make neat cuts along the contour of the applied pattern. Then we apply the template to the surface on which the print will be, and with the help of a pencil we transfer the drawing. In order for the print image to be correct, the drawing should be applied in a mirror image.
Step three. Let's start burning the picture. Here we need a device for burning. The main thing is to try to keep the same depth during this process so that the drawing turns out to be neat and uniform.
Step four. The resulting device must be painted using stain or drying oil. It is better to remove the remains of the dye with a napkin. Freshly colored print should be allowed to dry for at least a day.

Now you can safely start testing the resulting print. To do this, you can use both wax and sealing wax. Wax seals are more common due to the better quality characteristics in relation to wax seals. Sealing wax is a more reliable and durable material.
Taking the sealing wax, set it on fire and hold it at a short distance above the paper. Now you need to wait until a sufficient amount of material has dripped. After a few seconds, the sealing wax should be properly fixed on the surface. After that, we lubricate the seal with vegetable oil, remove the remnants with a napkin.
Now gently and evenly press the sealing wax with a seal and wait until it hardens. The seal should be removed gently, slightly rocking it. This will help prevent damage to the print.

Once upon a time, only persons of royal blood and noble nobles had a personal seal. You can take the advice of the author below and make such an unusually interesting thing for your personal use. It can come in handy for sealing your own hand-made wedding or anniversary invitations, you can also use it in decoupage and other types of hand-made needlework. For people working on a commercial basis, it is generally indispensable - you do not need to make name tags for your work, just take a jute twine and hang an imprint of your personal seal on the product instead of a tag.

For work, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:
1. A small piece of flat wooden stick. The author advises using a small piece from a shovel handle, which can be bought at building supermarkets.
2. The adhesive tape is not wide.
3. A simple pencil.
4. A picture of the future print printed on the printer.
5. Collet knife or thin, sharp, small knife.
6. Burner for wood.
7. Sandpaper.
8. Soft rags.
9. Napkins.
10. Vegetable oil.
11. Drying oil.
12. Brush for applying drying oil.
13. Matches.
14. Sealing wax or wax candle.

1 step.
To begin with, we carefully process a piece of stick with sandpaper. Especially carefully we will grind the end side on which we plan to place the print. Then, using a collet knife, very carefully cut out the picture of the previously printed print.

The author recommends printing a blank for printing on thick paper. Making a template for future printing is painstaking work that will require your full concentration. Something like this should look like a neatly cut blank for printing:

2 step.
Then we apply the cut out pattern to the end side of the previously prepared stick, fix it with adhesive tape and paint over the wooden surface with a pencil through the cut pattern on paper. It is very important not to forget that the template blank must be applied in a mirror image, otherwise you will get an incorrectly positioned print.

This is what you should get as a result of painting:

3 step.
Then, with a burning device, we carefully burn the tree according to the drawn pattern, while trying to burn the tree to the same depth.

4 step.
Now you need to process the blank for printing with drying oil. Then carefully wipe the workpiece with a rag and leave it to dry for 24 hours.

After the drying oil is completely dry, your seal is ready for use. You can imprint your personal seal on sealing wax, wax, paraffin, and even use hot glue from a thermal gun for these purposes. This glue comes in different colors, so try and experiment. But keep in mind that sealing wax will be the strongest and most durable. In order to make an impression of a seal on wax, light a candle and drip hot wax where, according to your idea, there should be a name seal.

Wax should be given a little time to cool slightly. This time is approximately 15-20 seconds. At this time, dip the seal in vegetable oil, gently blot excess oil with a napkin.

Then firmly press the seal to the slightly cooled wax and leave it like that until it hardens completely.

Today you will find out, I will clarify right away wax seal. Of course, not many people need it, since now many people write letters on the Internet, but if you really and unsurpassedly want to surprise your precious soulmate and plunge into romance, then such a wax seal will be the main advantage of the letter.

What we need for this is shown in the picture. There is stain in a jar, sunflower oil in a glass.

Now I’ll tell you step by step what and how to do, although everything will be clear from the pictures anyway.

1. We take our wooden blank, if it is not smooth, we thaw it with emery.

2. We cut out a circle from paper corresponding to a wooden blank. First, we draw on it what you want to see on your print, and then cut out this picture with a thin, sharp blade. This is the most important part of the job.

3. We apply a paper pattern to a wooden blank and outline it with a pencil.

4. With a sharp soldering iron on a wooden blank, we burn out what has been drawn.

5. We cover the entire workpiece with stain and our wax seal at home is ready.

6. Pour wax from a candle, it is advisable to take candles with thick wax, in which there are fewer impurities.

7. We dip our seal in sunflower oil so that the wax does not stick.

8. And while the wax has not melted, we put our seal.

These are the types of prints we get.

Now you can send letters with a unique seal of ancient times, you can also write in letters about unique crafts, such as or. Create miracles with your own hands!

We first encountered the need to apply a wax seal 3 years ago. The client wished to decorate gift chocolate with sealing wax. And the desire of the client, as you know, is the law ...

We bought a bunch of unnecessary (as it turned out later) equipment and got to work. The process was slow and looked like this. One person was diligently applying wax seals. The second one methodically tore them off: the prints turned out to be crooked and a good half of them went into marriage. We, of course, fulfilled the order. But a lot of time, nerves and money spent.

In general, as expected, the first pancake came out lumpy. But the very idea of using wax seals on packaging seemed interesting to us. We started experimenting. And our experiments were crowned with success.

Preparing for work: what you need to have on hand?

No complicated equipment is required to start making wax seals. Everything you need to get started, you can find at home or buy literally "for a penny" in the nearest store.

You will need:

  • Sealing wax. We recommend buying lump sealing wax - it costs less than candle sealing wax. Although if you need to decorate several invitations, for example, for a wedding or corporate anniversary, you can use wax in candles: it is somewhat easier to work with it.
  • Cliche on sealing wax. You can order a cliche from a company that specializes in the manufacture of seals and stamps. And to prepare a layout - in any vector program (for example, in Corel, Illustrator).
  • metal cup for melting sealing wax. We use cheap army camping bowls.
  • Tea spoon.
  • Building hair dryer will help remove the remnants of sealing wax from a spoon or speed up the process of melting the substance.
  • Electric stove. If you plan to make several prints, then it is quite possible to get by with a home stove or even a building hair dryer. If there is a lot of work to be done or it will be carried out regularly, then it is better to purchase an inexpensive stove with one burner. Otherwise, you can thoroughly spoil the home oven with sealing wax smudges.

Absolutely useless:

  • Wax gun. At its core, this is a conventional thermal gun. Using them is not only inconvenient, but almost impossible.
  • Wax waxers. They are not cheap, but they are of no use. We declare with all responsibility: the use of wax wax will not speed up the process and does not improve the quality of the finished seals. Therefore, we advise you not to throw money away, but to spend it on something really useful.

DIY wax seal: step by step instructions with video

So, we stocked up with everything you need, now you can start making wax seals.

When working, follow this algorithm:

  1. Solid sealing wax should be split into small pieces.
  2. So it will melt much faster. In addition, it is more convenient to pour small pieces into a cup for melting during operation.

  3. Melt the sealing wax on the stove at medium temperature, stirring constantly.
  4. We do not recommend melting a lot of substance at once: it will be difficult to work with it. Also, do not bring the molten mass to a boil. Boiled sealing wax forms bubbles that give the finished prints a sloppy look.

According to the manufacturers, the melting point of sealing wax is 60°C. But, as our practice has shown, this indicator can vary significantly depending on the color of the substance. Apparently, this is due to the pigments that are used to color the wax mass.

So, black and white sealing wax has a much lower melting point than red. Bronze sealing wax has the highest melting point and hardens much faster than sealing wax of other colors.

  5. Scoop up sealing wax with a spoon and pour it on the right place.
  6. Make sure that the sealing wax is not too liquid, otherwise it will spread over the surface and give an ugly impression. Press the resulting clot on the cliché and wait a while.

Sealing wax of different colors takes different times to set. Black sealing wax is the most difficult to work with - it hardens for a very long time (several times longer than, for example, red).

  7. Wait for the sealing wax to harden and remove the cliche.
  8. After the sealing wax hardens, the cliche itself will easily fall behind the finished seal. It is better to shoot the cliche a little sideways, and not horizontally.

  9. Repeat steps three and four for subsequent items.

Do not forget to pour new batches of crushed sealing wax into the melting bowl as you use it - this will prevent it from boiling over.

In addition to the article, we have prepared a video on how the masters of our company apply wax seals to corporate gifts. We hope that the video material will give you a visual representation of the process of applying wax seals with your own hands at home.

Problems when working with sealing wax and solutions

  • Boiling wax.
  • When working with sealing wax at home, certain problems may arise. One of them is the boiling of sealing wax, leading to printing defects. If the substance boiled during melting, then you need to reduce the temperature of the plate and stir the sealing wax intensively. Stirring will remove air bubbles from the sealing wax, which reduce the quality of the prints.

  • The print falls off after curing.
  • Another problem is the weak adhesion of the wax mass and the material on which it is applied. This leads to the fact that after solidification, the seal simply falls off. In our practice, this happened with craft bags, to which sealing wax did not want to stick. We did a lot of experiments and found a solution. If a small amount of hot-melt adhesive is added to the melted sealing wax (stems for hot-melt guns), then the seal will reliably adhere to the craft paper.

  • Sealing wax sticks to cliches.
  • In this case, we use a building hair dryer. With its help, we heat the cliche and carefully remove the softened wax mass with a rag. Some advise using a solvent to clean the cliche. We have not practiced this method. But you can try both methods and decide which one works best.

Wax seals in decor: options for use

With the help of wax impressions, you can decorate a variety of objects. Textured prints give them a vintage look, make them elegant and spectacular.

  • Application of sealing wax on paper and cardboard.
  • The classics of the genre are scrolls and envelopes with wax seals. With the application of prints on envelopes, no difficulties arise. As for the scrolls, there is one trick here. In order to make a scroll, take a round stick and wrap paper around it. It is necessary to pour sealing wax into the right place - it should not be too liquid, otherwise the clot will spread. The sealing wax must be firmly pressed down on the cliché, and the scroll is ready.

  • Applying sealing wax to fabric.
  • In this way, for example, gift bags can be beautifully decorated. Feature: when applied, sealing wax flows through the fibers of the fabric. Therefore, under the canvas you need to put something metal - a thin ruler or a trowel.

Ropes sealed with a wax seal look very impressive on gifts and scrolls. To get such an impression, take a metal sheet or a construction trowel and grease it with grease. Put the ropes on the metal, fill them with sealing wax and put a cliché. After complete hardening, the wax seal will easily lag behind the metal surface.

  • Applying sealing wax to wood.
  • We often use this technique to decorate wooden boxes with corporate gifts. Wax seal, by the way, can be combined with a label. Applying sealing wax to a tree, as a rule, does not cause any problems.

  • Waxing wax imprint on glass.
  • This method can be used in the design of bottles. For application on glass, a thick sealing wax of the consistency of "sour cream" is required. To get it, it is enough to lower the heating temperature of the plate. You can also add a few solid pieces to a cup with molten sealing wax and stir the mass intensively.
