And consider the option that the client came to you a second time and made exactly the same purchase. In total, for two purchases you lost 200 rubles from the possible profit.
In total, you lost approximately 30% of your possible profit from two purchases.
Here it is, the very reason when discounts ruin the business. And if you remove the discount completely? The company's profit will increase by 30%. But there is a possibility that customers will start to leave, start to refuse, etc. That is why there should be some other loyalty system, there should be other ways to stimulate and bring the client to the purchase. As an analogue, it can be bonuses.

Further, the client was again credited with bonuses already from the second purchase and he can spend them if he makes the third one. And then in a circle: purchase - bonuses - write-off - purchase - bonuses - write-off.
And even if the client for some reason left you, you still worked with him to the maximum!

Let's figure out from the point of view of the size of profit (without taking into account the general situation on the market, the situation with the inventory, the behavior of competitors), how much more profitable it is to stimulate the client with bonuses than with discounts. You can also see why, in situations where, for example, a 25% discount leads to a loss, a bonus of the same size allows you to make a profit.

Suppose that the cost of the goods you sell is 1000 rubles. You sell it at a price of 1300 rubles. Thus, the markup is 30% or 300 rubles.

Case of 10% discount.

You provide the client with a 10% discount - this is 130 rubles. Thus, your profit is reduced to 170 rubles, that is, by 43% relative to the original value.

Now your margin is 17%.


The case of a 10% bonus.

Unlike a discount, a bonus (points, miles, thank you) is provided when purchasing a product, but can only be used on the next purchase. Consider a model in which bonuses can either be saved or spent. That is, if the client chooses to spend bonuses, they are not credited for this purchase.

Let's assume that the client bought the goods for 1300 rubles. and received a 10% bonus. The client will be credited with 130 bonuses, and there will be no additional expenses.

With the 2nd purchase, the client will buy the goods for rubles and bonuses, spending 1170 rubles. and 130 bonuses.

In this case, the client will spend 1300 + 1170 rubles on two purchases. and 130 bonuses for goods worth 2600 rubles.

The total customer discount for the 2nd purchase was:

(2600 – 1300 – 1170) / 2600 = 0,05 = 5%

Statistics show that if there are bonuses that the buyer can pay for, the average amount of a repeat purchase will be higher, then the size of the actual discount will be less.

If the client makes a third purchase in the amount of 1300 rubles. and will again receive a 10% bonus, he will be credited with another 130 bonuses, which he will be able to spend on the 4th purchase.

The total customer discount for the 3rd purchase was:

(3900 – 1300 – 1170 – 1300) / 3900 = 0,0333 = 3,33%

With the 4th purchase, the client will buy the goods for rubles and bonuses, having already spent 5200 rubles. and 260 bonuses.

The total customer discount for the 4th purchase was:

(5200 – 1300 – 1170 – 1300 – 1170) / 5200 = 0,05 = 5%

With the 5th purchase, the client will pay 6,500 rubles for the goods. and add 130 bonuses for the 6th purchase.

Total customer discount for the 5th purchase will be:

(6500 – 1300 – 1170 – 1300 – 1170 – 1300) / 6500 = 0,04 = 4%

After the 7th purchase, in the case of a 10% bonus, the profit will be 1,710 rubles. If we just gave a 10% discount on the purchase, the profit would be: 170 × 7 = 1190 rubles.

So in this bonus example, you earned 44% more.

Conclusion: from the point of view of profit mathematics, providing a 10% bonus to a client with such an extra charge is almost 1.5 times more profitable than a 10% discount.
