How to make a birdhouse: from boards and logs for different birds. What are the dimensions of the correct birdhouse

An interesting observation: there are much fewer birds outside the city than in the city. Why is that? It turns out that in the city for birds there are many secluded places. But the most frequent refuge is Through a narrow gap near the lamp, the bird squeezes inside. Here, having descended along the trunk of the pipe, she builds her nest on a coil of wires. Can you imagine the conditions under which a bird lives, a small fighter against plant pests? But a person is able to thank the winged helpers, but how? Build which will be larger than the lantern pipe.

Construction materials

To determine how to build a birdhouse for starlings, you need to select the appropriate material. Wooden boards of exclusively hardwood species - birch, alder, aspen are best suited for construction. Coniferous wood is not recommended. It releases a resin that makes the surfaces of the birdhouse sticky. Not suitable for plywood bird house. It does not retain heat well, making the new building very cold. And it practically does not miss sounds that are very important for birds, especially in case of danger. Pressed wood (fiberboard, chipboard) releases toxins, so it is generally not suitable for a birdhouse.

Birdhouse drawing

A correctly calculated and drawn scheme will greatly simplify the construction process. Therefore, before building a birdhouse, the drawing must be made taking into account all the necessary dimensions. The optimal height of the house for the starling is 35 cm. For the bottom, you will need a blank in the form of a square with a side of 16 cm. The letok should be 5-6 centimeters in diameter. Important! Before building a birdhouse, the dimensions should be checked several times. If the proposed living space seems cramped to the birds, they will simply bypass your new building. However, it is not worth chasing large sizes. Otherwise, offspring grown in too spacious apartments will be sickly and weak.

Step-by-step instruction

Creating a simple birdhouse does not require much skill or experience with wood. The main thing is to use the drawings correctly. If you are building a birdhouse for the first time, then the question naturally arises: how to build a birdhouse in stages?

The image shows a diagram of a traditional durable house, known to everyone since childhood.

The sides of the roof are different. One should be longer by the thickness of the board to cover the edge of the first. After all, a birdhouse should not only be practical, but also have an excellent appearance.

After all the blanks are cut out of the board, be sure to check whether they make up the birdhouse correctly. If all the previous tips were taken into account, then there should be no problems when assembling the house.

It is best not to drive nails, but to drill small holes. The nail may not properly enter the wood, then the sharp edge will stick out in the birdhouse, making the housing unsafe for birds. Or maybe even split the wood. To make the drilling process as safe as possible, fix the wooden parts in several C-clamps. Before using nails or screws, be sure to glue the edges of the sides with a good

After assembling the frame, you should take up the round entrance. For such purposes, there is a special drill. It drills a hole very quickly and accurately. Such a notch will turn out with smooth edges, and therefore does not need additional grinding.

If there is no such drill, drill several holes inside the circle, and then cut out the desired notch with a jigsaw. Not bad for this purpose is suitable brace.

There is another method on how to make a notch. But it assumes a frame that has not yet been assembled. The front board can be divided in the center into two halves. Quite easily, with the help of a chisel, the necessary half-holes are cut down. You can connect both halves with the help of spikes - nails with broken off hats.

The next step is the installation of the roof.

Under the entrance it is necessary to place a stick 1.5 cm thick - a porch. Too large a porch will invariably attract crows and jackdaws to the birdhouse.

Types of houses

It is customary to call any birdhouse a birdhouse, although it is not built for starlings alone. Other birds also need housing. How to build a birdhouse for birds depends on the characteristics of future residents. For example, housing for titmouse is built with a height of 25-30 cm. The bottom should be a square with a side of 10-12 cm. The notch for tits is 30-35 mm in diameter.

Wagtail housing requires a completely different design. The bird itself does not have sufficient paw tenacity, so it needs a certain ladder in front of the house. And you need to have such a house under the roof, approximately at a height of three to five meters.

Pika feels more comfortable in a house with two through holes. They are located on the left and right. Such additional entrances allow the bird to escape in time if a predator attacks the housing.

decorative houses

Fans of original solutions can dream up a little. It is enough to decorate the birdhouse quite a bit, and it will take on a truly fantastic look. The birdhouse, stylized as a village house, looks original. For birds, it does not matter how the housing looks from the outside. The main thing is to keep it warm and dry inside. And the designer will bring a lot of pleasure to decorate the homes of birds.

If desired, it is not difficult to build even an apartment building. Several families will settle in such a birdhouse at once, which will greet the rising sun with a ringing joyful chirping. In this case, there will be no difficulties how to build a birdhouse. The photo below clearly illustrates the process.

The house can differ significantly in shape. An interesting solution is housing in the form of a rhombus. However, the question arises - is it convenient for birds?

It is up to you to decide: how to build a birdhouse, the size and decor of which completely depend on the intended tenants and your skills.

The best housing option for birds is a wooden birdhouse. It is warm, and the birds in it feel like in the hollow of a tree. However, not everyone has the opportunity to build such housing on their own. In this case, improvised materials will help out.

A beautiful birdhouse is obtained from a log. The core can be selected with a chisel. It remains only to drill a hole for the entrance and think over the roof.

Housing for birds can be built even from an ordinary plastic bottle. But such a house must be insulated. You should tie the bottle round with warm ropes or even tie a tight case. And do not forget about the sharp cuts of the hole. It is better to paste them around the perimeter with adhesive tape.

How to install a birdhouse?

So, in theory, you already know how to build a birdhouse, but an important point in creating housing is the correct installation of the house.

Most often, a birdhouse is nailed to a long pole, which is then screwed to a tree with wire about 5-7 meters from the ground. Hang the house slightly tilted forward, then rainwater will not flow into the housing for the birds. It is worth considering the direction. The letok should go south or east.

House protection

Everyone knows that cats are excellent hunters. They are so dexterous that they can catch a bird even on the fly. Based on this, it is necessary to protect the birdhouse as much as possible from the teeth and claws of a predator. Place a circle of plywood in the middle of the pole, parallel to the ground. The diameter of the circle should be 45-50 cm. Cats will not be able to overcome such an obstacle, and the chicks will remain safe and sound.

Before building a birdhouse, be sure to dry the material. Raw wood will dry out very quickly, and the house will become uninhabitable.

At the bottom of the birdhouse, it’s good to pour a small layer of earth, peat and sawdust. Such a layer should be no more than 5 cm.

It is very easy to make the roof removable. Then, when cleaning the house, when the tenants leave their homes in the fall, there will be no particular difficulties. To do this, nail a thick board from the inside of the roof, which will enter the house, like a cork in the neck of a bottle.

Instead of a conclusion

Knowing how to build a birdhouse, it is not difficult to calculate the size of future housing. With the help of such a house, you can not only alleviate the fate of birds, but also get rid of plant pests. One brood of starlings is enough to protect plantings from thousands of May beetles and larvae in just 5 days! And the birds will bring the greatest joy to children. After all, what is familiar and understandable to adults is a window into the wonderful world of wildlife for children!

We suggest you help the birds by building cozy houses for them. If the birds settle near you, it will be more convenient to watch them, in the garden they will save plants from pests. And in summer, the most cautious observers will be able to see the first flight of chicks from the nest.

Whenever birds settle in the house you built, you feel proud that someone else needs you. It turns out - you do not live in vain!

I have long been interested in the question: why are there a dime a dozen in the city of great tits, and outside the city - once, twice and counted? The secret was revealed quite suddenly, during another conversation with the ornithologist Alexei Murashov. It turned out that the doors of numerous dwellings are always open for titmouse in the city, while in the forests and gardens of old hollow trees it becomes less and less. Guess where these cute birds live? I myself would never have found out, even with all my professional powers of observation! It turned out - in the lampposts.

A narrow slit at the top near the lamp is enough for the bird to get inside the "pipe", and there, having descended several meters down, it builds a nest on the "twisting" of wires. Can you imagine WHAT an insufficiently "illuminated" village loses, what invaluable helpers! Remember the picture from old school textbooks, at one glance at which even an inveterate loser could understand what benefits only one titmouse brings over the summer.

As now, I see this simple composition: a feathered helper sits modestly on one side of the scale, and on the other - a huge pile of midges, caterpillars, bugs, larvae and other pests, many times more than its own weight of a useful bird. For greater clarity, I would add a third element to this equation: baskets with crops that could be devoured and defiled by all these creeping and flying reptiles caught by the great tit. Birds bring special joy to children, because what is so understandable and natural for us is a sensational discovery for kids. Not far from our dacha lives a buzzard that looks like an eagle, a large predator. For several years now, my little son has been happily recognizing him from the first days of his arrival and calls him nothing more than "our familiar buzzard."

Last spring, a gray flycatcher built a nest over the door of our terrace and the whole family had to wait for the mother to feed the chicks in order to go to the table and eat their cold lunch. Since then, I prefer to hang flycatcher houses myself and will be happy to tell you how you can do it on your site.

Looking ahead, I will explain what "combined houses" means. The fact is that a birdhouse or a titmouse are just artificial hollows. Instead, you can use an ordinary hollow - a solid piece of round wood with a hollowed out core, but technologically it is quite difficult (you need to have a special tool). However, it is not necessary to make a completely round hollow, it is enough to make just one side of an ordinary rectangular box. If, instead of a flat front wall, you use a semi-circular slab with bark, in which you drill a hole for the entrance, then the birds will prefer such a dwelling in the first place. This is the combo house.

Now the question arises: what diameter should the inlet be? The answer is simple and specific: depending on which of the birds you would like to see inside. If a starling, then 4.5-5 cm in diameter, if a titmouse or a flycatcher, then 3 cm (for small titmouse, even less - 2.7 cm). An ordinary field sparrow can also live in the houses described above. However, do not be discouraged, firstly, this will happen only if the apartment did not suit the tit (it is not a big problem for her to drive out the sparrow), and secondly, everything is better than the dumb emptiness of an empty apartment.

The classic wagtail is very similar to a birdhouse that is simply laid on its side. The main feature is that the boards that serve as the floor and roof should protrude strongly forward (by 10 centimeters). Thus, the birds will have a seizure and the same visor. Instead of an inlet, you can saw through a regular slit incision 4 cm wide. The approximate parameters of the wagtail "box" itself are: length - 25-30 cm, width - 12-14 cm, height - 10 cm. With a width, we did not take into account a ten-centimeter visor and the same step , so if you make the floor and ceiling from a single board, then its dimensions will be 25x22 or 30x24 cm, respectively. Another very important detail is a low partition wall inside the house, which separates the nesting chamber and the entrance hall. This is necessary so that robber birds or cats do not get to the chicks. Wagtails, unlike titmouse or nuthatch, acrobats are unimportant, so even at home they prefer to walk "on foot" on a horizontal floor. They will fly in, go to the partition, flutter through it and get straight to their kids. And the kids will not fall out before the deadline until they fledge and are able to overcome the barrier on their own.

Another important point is that wagtails do not like dizzying heights, so the optimal distance from the "penthouse" to the ground should not exceed 2-3 meters.

Remember, last year I told you a story about firefighters who painted half the birdhouses green and half red (because there was not enough green) and were very surprised when they found that the birds settled in the scarlet houses in the first place? Indeed, it is red and gray that they prefer to the rest, but only if the nesting place was not painted with oil or nitro paint. It is best to do this with a water-based emulsion or ordinary whitewash. It is better not to paint inside bird apartments, and the walls should be rough, burrs. The exception is, perhaps, only titmice, since it should be dark inside. If the inner walls are black, the titmouse will be very pleased, because its main trick is to frighten enemies in the dark, skillfully imitating snake hissing. Imagine: some curious squirrel climbs into a hollow, sticks its muzzle in the hope of profiting from bird eggs, and from there, with a loud hiss, two huge white eyes begin to rush at it (this is what snow-white titmouse cheeks look like on a black head). Here, whoever you want, the hamstrings will shake!

In fact, titmouses are built in exactly the same way as birdhouses. The only difference is in dimensions. If you want to populate a large titmouse, then the depth of the "box" or nest should be 50 cm, and if you are trying for small titmouse, then 25 cm is enough. Other songbirds, such as redstarts or flycatchers, may well settle in such a dwelling. And titmouse-titmouses still definitely need to make a small entrance and pour rotten sawdust inside, half of which the birds will gladly throw into the hole and, having realized their behavioral reflexes, will begin to settle down with a calm soul.

Dimensions of titmouses: bottom - 10x10 cm (for a small one - 8x8 cm), letok - 3 cm (for a small one - 2.7 cm). They should be hung to a height of about 3 meters (in parks - from 2-4 meters). If you plan to make the roof removable (which makes cleaning and processing the house easier), then nail it on a couple of nails or secure it with wire.

The optimal size of the bottom should be no larger than the area of the hollow, which is usually hollowed out in trees by a large spotted woodpecker: 10x10, 12x12 or 10x12 cm. If the apartments are larger, then 4-5 chicks will survive in them, which parents will not be able to feed properly. The offspring will grow frail, sickly and will not survive the difficult flight to warmer climes. In addition, weak individuals are carriers of various epizootics (after all, starlings are active distributors of many dangerous diseases). In a cramped house, only two or three chicks will grow up, but these will be strong, healthy individuals, less prone to diseases and infections, which will support the power and strength of the native population. And one more very important point - do not be zealous, one birdhouse is enough for ten other artificial nests for birds (titmouses, flycatchers, wagtails, etc.). In other words, just a few starling houses are quite enough for a small garden partnership, but there should be ten times more other bird dwellings.

So, for the construction of a birdhouse, we need the following materials:

  • Dry unplaned boards. Boards preferably take hardwood, such as birch, aspen, alder. We categorically do not recommend using glued or pressed wood (chipboard, fiberboard, plywood, etc.) when building a birdhouse - it is extremely short-lived when placed on the street, not to mention its toxicity. Boards should be taken with a width of 12-16 cm and a thickness of at least 2 cm, with such a thickness the birdhouse will retain heat well.
  • about 20 nails 35-45 mm long
  • if you want to make the birdhouse beautiful, you can take water-based paint

From the tool we will take:

  • pencil
  • ruler
  • hacksaw for wood
  • a hammer
  • drill
  • feather drill 30-40 mm
  • and of course our skillful hands

To build a birdhouse, we offer you 3 drawings that we found on the site. The first of the drawings is the easiest to implement, using its example we will consider the manufacture of a birdhouse.

In our example, boards with a thickness of 2 cm are taken, if you don’t have them, you can use others, but accordingly you will have to slightly adjust the dimensions of the bottom and roof of the birdhouse. You may well take the initiative and deviate from the proposed drawings, while you should consider a few important notes:

  • the total height of the birdhouse should be from 30 to 35 cm
  • bottom size should be made from 10 * 10 to 15 * 15 cm
  • the distance from the bottom to the notch should be 15-20 cm
  • inlet diameter (tap hole) 30-40 mm
It is worth noting that for different birds, different sizes of entrance will be optimal, so for a starling it is 32-35 mm, for a nuthatch 28-30 mm, for a tit or a sparrow 25-29 mm.

According to the drawing, we cut the boards and proceed to assembly (photos of the assembly process are borrowed from the site):

Prepared boards

We nail the front wall to the two side walls with nails.

Insert the bottom of the birdhouse

Pinning the back wall

Assembling the lid

Putting the lid in place

  • some birdhouse builders make the inlet rectangular - this is in principle acceptable, but since birds are naturally closer to a round hollow, they are more likely to settle in a house with a round entrance
  • do not try to fit the boards close to each other, the existing slots will provide the necessary ventilation
  • try not to have protruding nails inside the birdhouse and sharp split edges, you don’t want the birds to get hurt
  • we make the roof of the birdhouse removable so that it can be cleaned, however, it is necessary to fix it on the house by wrapping it with wire or screwing it with screws so that predators cannot get inside
  • you can install a perch in front of the inlet to your taste - birds do not particularly need it
  • if you couldn’t find unplanned boards, we recommend that you make several notches on the inside with a chisel before assembling the birdhouse, because it will be extremely difficult for birds and especially small chicks to get out on a smooth surface
  • painting the birdhouse is not recommended, the pungent smell and bright color can scare away birds, but if you really want to, you can take natural water-based paint and paint the birdhouse gray or red
  • if the birdhouse is located near the house, you can install a video camera with infrared illumination on the inside of the cover and then you can watch the life of your feathered neighbors - how the birds settle in the house, hatch and feed the chicks, how the chicks begin to get out of the birdhouse and become “on the wing” »

Well, if the hands, as they say, grew “not from there”, then you can buy yourself a ready-made birdhouse or a constructor for assembling it on the site

The long-awaited spring has come. There are only a few days left before the arrival of our feathered friends. But the birds in the yard of the house or on the site are always a joy. But are we ready to meet them? Are you sure that the birds will want to settle near our house? If not, then get down to business!

Today we will look at how to make a birdhouse correctly, what materials are best used to make it, and also give some diagrams and drawings.

First of all, you need to decide on the material of the birdhouse. It is desirable that the birdhouse be completely made of natural materials. Some even make birdhouses out of stone, it looks very beautiful and very unusual. It all depends on the imagination and the possibilities! But most often, ordinary dry boards are used for these purposes (with the exception of conifers).

What types of wood are preferred for making a birdhouse? Take birch or oak. The recommended thickness of the board should be at least 20mm so that the birdhouse retains heat well. At the same time, the boards do not need to be sanded, they must necessarily have a rough surface, at least from the inside. If the board is smooth, you can scratch it properly with a knife - so it will be easier for birds, especially chicks, to get out of the birdhouse. It is highly undesirable to use compressed or glued wood (fiberboard, chipboard, plywood, etc.) for construction - it is very short-lived, not to mention toxicity.

You should not decorate the birdhouse with any rustling objects and sparkles, otherwise, instead of a cozy bird house, you will get the most natural scarecrow.

Keep in mind that you do not need to make the birdhouse very spacious. If you nevertheless make it larger than in the drawings below, then as many as 4-5 chicks will survive in such apartments, as a result, their parents will not be able to feed them properly. Accordingly, frail offspring will grow up, which will not withstand a difficult flight to warmer climes. In a cramped house, only 2-3 chicks will grow up, but at the same time they will be healthy and strong.

To make a birdhouse, we need the following tools:

  • ruler with a pencil;
  • nails or screws;
  • hammer (screwdriver);
  • wood saw,
  • drill.

Below is a drawing of a birdhouse of a classic design (Figure 1).

Figure 1 - Classic birdhouse

It is clear that this is the simplest, but far from the only type of birdhouse.

Here is another drawing of the birdhouse "House", which has a slightly different design (Figure 2).

Figure 2 - Birdhouse "House"

This model has a fixed roof. Naturally, such a design is inconvenient if it is planned to inspect and clean the birdhouse every year before the arrival of birds. To make the lid removable, a sleeve is nailed to its lower part, which has the same dimensions as the bottom (Figure 1), due to which the lid will hold well. Care must be taken that it cannot be blown away by the wind or knocked down by some crow. The easiest way is to screw the lid to the house with wire. It is most rational to make a flat roof with a slight slope back, and not a gable roof, as in the drawing above - it will begin to leak faster than usual.

Fastening the bottom and walls is best done with screws, but nails are also allowed. A plank is stuffed to the back wall, which is attached to a pole or tree.

As you can see, the design of birdhouses is extremely simple. The drawings show birdhouses made of boards 20mm thick. You can use others, but only then you will have to adjust the dimensions of the roof and bottom of the birdhouse. You can deviate from the drawings and take your own initiative, you just need to take into account some important notes:

  • the total height should be 30–35 cm;
  • the size of the bottom of the birdhouse is usually made about 15x15cm;
  • the distance from the notch to the bottom should be at least 15–20 cm;
  • the inlet (notch) should have a diameter of about 50mm.

The above sizes of birdhouses are ideal for starlings and sparrows. The optimal diameter of the notch for different birds is different. So, for great tits, redstarts, nuthatches and vertishes, the dimensions of the bottom of the birdhouse should be made smaller - 100x100 mm, height - up to 280 mm, and the diameter of the notch is about 30 - 45 mm; for small tits, pied flycatchers, the bottom should be made about 80x80 mm, the height is about 250 mm, and the diameter of the notch is 30 mm.

Using the example of a classic birdhouse (Figure 1), we will visually consider the process of its assembly. We cut the boards in accordance with the drawing and get to work.

We fasten the front wall of the birdhouse to the side walls with nails or screws.

We attach the back wall and bottom

It remains to make a removable cover ...

We install any perch in front of the entrance to your taste

We nail the sleeve to the lid of the birdhouse. The roof of the birdhouse in this case is made removable in order to be able to clean it. However, it must be wired or screwed on to be secure.

Birdhouse assembly

You need to try to knock down the bird house as tightly as possible. It is advisable to smear all the cracks with clay or caulk with tow. Nails and sharp split edges should not stick out inside the birdhouse so that the birds do not get hurt. It is not advisable to paint the birdhouse, it is enough to treat it with drying oil. If you still decide to paint it, then it is better to use oil paints in translucent tones.

As you can see, making a birdhouse with your own hands is not at all difficult. In addition, this activity is quite exciting and very useful. 🙂

And finally, I suggest watching a video lesson in English (unfortunately, it was not found in Russian, but in principle everything is clear here), clearly showing one of the ways to make a birdhouse with an unusual - gable - roof. Looks pretty original.

Complicated? Here is one of the easiest ways.

When harvesting firewood, choose the most appropriate size and shape of the wood and make an original birdhouse out of it!

Perhaps everyone can make such a bird house. Cheap and cheerful, as they say.

We will be happy to look at the photos of your homemade products, post them in the comments - we will evaluate, discuss, and advise!

To take under the protection of a family of birds is a noble and pleasant task. And the first step to this is the construction of a bird house. A birdhouse familiar from childhood can be easily made with your own hands, but for each type of bird there are design and placement features that must be taken into account before calling new neighbors to the site.

Classic wooden birdhouse

A birdhouse of the simplest design consists of a square bottom with a side of 13-15 cm, blanks of sides 30-35 cm high with a slope in the upper part are cut end-to-end to fit the bottom, the end and back part should be 2-4 cm wider for fastening.

The difference in the length of the back and front walls of the birdhouse should be calculated so that the slopes are tightly adjacent to the lid. Another piece is cut to size and attached to the inside of the removable roof, providing a tight seal and the ability to open the birdhouse for cleaning.

Another option is a house with a pitched roof. Two identical blanks are overlapped on the trapezoidal front and rear wall. It is not necessary to nail such a roof tightly in order to provide access to annual cleaning and disinfection.

A round inlet is made with an indentation of 5-6 cm from the upper edge and a diameter of 4-5 cm. In the lower part of the building there should be enough space (10-15 cm) for the nest, protected from the wind.

Birdhouse parts are fastened with nails or self-tapping screws and wood glue.

The roof slopes protect against excessive moisture, they should protrude slightly on the sides to protect the walls as well. Joints should neatly, without gaps, adjoin each other. It is necessary to avoid unnecessary decorative elements on the walls and facade, which can become a place of moisture accumulation.

Pine or hardwood boards 2 to 4 cm thick are used as building material. Fiberboard and chipboard are not recommended, since the smells of chemicals contained in their composition can scare away birds.

For the same reason, the inner surfaces of the birdhouse are not treated with varnishes or paints. Outside, it can be sanded and made a waterproof coating.

Wooden birdhouses are a good object for the realization of creative abilities. They can be painted and decorated with decor, but it is better not to use glass and other materials that reflect light. Photos of finished birdhouses of different styles will help you choose the most suitable option.

duplyanka

In order to cut a birdhouse from a wooden deck, it is more convenient to use a chainsaw. A brief instruction for creating such a birdhouse is as follows.

At the beginning of work, you need to firmly install the deck in a vertical position. The intended cut is divided into three equal parts: the upper one is for the slopes of the roof, the middle one is for the hollow and the perch, and the other third is for the nest.

First, the upper slopes for the roof are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. Then, if possible, the core is removed evenly over the entire height and an entrance hole is cut through. And only after that the birdhouse is cut off from the deck along the bottom line.

Houses for birds from improvised materials

Boots, bags, lamp shades, containers of similar size with necks, dried pumpkin - can become building material for a bird house.

Before you make a birdhouse with your own hands, you need to remember to observe the correct proportions to place the nest.

You also need to consider that the inlet should let the inhabitants through, but not be too large, for the sake of their safety. A homemade house should provide protection from moisture and wind.

Birdhouse installation

The ideal place for a birdhouse is a tree trunk free from branches. A triple-length wooden beam or pole is attached to the back wall, which is fixed by wrapping it with wire.

Then you need to give the birdhouse a slight forward tilt with a small piece of wood placed between the trunk and the house. This will prevent the chicks from falling and make it difficult for enemies (cats and crows) to access them. The entrance, and as it is also called, the letok, should face south or southeast to avoid cold winds.

Another option is fixing on the facade of buildings. But it is not worth hanging or placing a house on the branches, it must be stable and securely fixed. For a comfortable living, you also need a shade that protects from direct sunlight.

You need to fix the bird house at a height of 2.5 to 5 meters, out of the reach of cats and other hunters. It is worth taking care of the absence of steps and branches that will help them get to the nest.

Often, a traditional perch in low-lying birdhouses becomes a support for the penetration of unwanted guests.

DIY birdhouse photo

When the house for the owners of the site is built, it's time to think about the rest of the inhabitants of the surroundings. Our helpers, the birds, also need housing. What it will be depends on the type of birds that need to be attracted to the garden.

"Building standards" for a birdhouse

When choosing housing, birds are guided not by the beauty and elegance of the building, but by its safety and functionality. Birds are guaranteed to settle in the garden under a number of conditions:

  • the birdhouse is made of hardwood;
  • the thickness of the walls of the house - at least 2 cm;
  • when assembling, glue or materials based on it were not used: plywood, fiberboard, OSB.

Fresh wood of coniferous trees is unsuitable, because it releases resin that sticks feathers together. In addition, birds do not tolerate strong odors, so instead of glue, nails or screws are used to fasten parts.

From an old pine board without resin pockets, you can make a birdhouse

It depends on the parameters of the house which type of birds will choose it. Most birds recognize their future home by the size of the inlet. Notch diameter:

  • for starlings - 4.5–5 cm;
  • for redstarts - 3.5 cm;
  • for tits - 2.8–3.5 cm.

If you cut the entrance too wide, the nest will be easily accessible to predators. And there is also a great chance that squirrels or large birds will settle there.

Squirrels are funny neighbors, if the owners of the site do not mind treating them with their berries and nuts

Try not to exceed the standard dimensions of the birdhouse:

  • height - 30–35 cm;
  • bottom inside - 12–17 cm.

Otherwise, the birds will hatch too many chicks, some of which will die due to underfeeding. It is better for parents to raise 2-3 healthy cubs.

Not only starlings settle in birdhouses, but also sparrows, flycatchers, swifts, all kinds of tits and redstarts.

Every bird has a favorite house design

It is not necessary to make a perch on a birdhouse. Magpies can sit on it and destroy the nest. Thresholds on the house also do not attract birds. Due to the structure of the legs, it is inconvenient for them to stand on a plane.

A birdhouse with a notch diameter of 3 to 4 cm is suitable for the smallest birds. After sawing out the details of the birdhouse, grind the cut points. The simplest birdhouse for redstart is with a square notch.

The less attention the dwelling attracts, the better for the birds. It is advisable not to paint it and not add bright details. A house made of untreated wood is the best option. In extreme cases, odorless paint is used to match the color of the bark of trees - gray, brown or maroon.

Too brightly colored thin plywood birdhouses are used only for decorative purposes - to decorate the garden, birds are unlikely to settle in them

Another thing is decor with natural materials. Pieces of bark, twigs, moss will decorate and camouflage nesting.

Bark and branches hide the dwelling from the watchful eye of predators.

Birdhouse made of wooden boards with a flat roof

Spring is coming soon again and my husband and I decided to make the right birdhouse for our winged friends. Our last house was chosen by squirrels and adapted for a nut warehouse, it turned out to be too big for birds.

Now the choice fell on the simplest design of a birdhouse with a pitched roof.

Instruments:

  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill and drills;
  • jigsaw or saw.

Materials:

  • meter board 10 cm wide - 1 pc.;
  • meter board 15 cm wide - 1 pc.;
  • nails and screws.

Step-by-step instruction:

1. We mark the boards according to the drawing.

The drawing is needed so that all the details of the birdhouse come together

2. We cut out all the details, except for the bottom and the roof spike. With a chisel we make notches on the inside of the facade so that the chicks can climb to the exit.

While cutting the board, press it firmly against the surface so that it vibrates less.

3. We get 2 sidewalls of a birdhouse measuring 10x30 cm, a facade and a backdrop - 15x30 cm, a roof - 15x25 cm. We intentionally increase the overhang of the roof to protect against predators.

Board surfaces do not need to be sanded.

4. On the front wall, with a pencil and a ruler, we mark a notch with a diameter of 3 to 5 cm, depending on the type of birds that are expected in the garden.

Measure the middle of the bottom and sides of the facade, draw lines and mark the notch at their intersection

5. We drill a hole inside the notch circle.

First, a hole is drilled in the facade for a jigsaw knife

6. We insert a jigsaw knife into it and cut out the notch.

Move the jigsaw slowly so that the knife does not fly off

7. We stuff nails on the outer walls at the attachment points so that the points stick out a little.

If you hammer nails in advance, there is less chance that they will bend.

8. We assemble the body of 4 walls of the birdhouse in the following order: facade, side walls, backdrop.

Nails are hammered into the walls slowly so as not to bend

9. We take a board 10 cm wide, apply it to the place where the bottom of the birdhouse will be and mark the cut line. We do the same with the roof spike.

Do not cut the bottom in advance, first assemble the case and measure the actual dimensions

10. We saw off the listed details. We insert the bottom into the body and fix it with nails.

11. We nail the spike to the roof from the back.

The roof spike protects the birdhouse from rain getting inside

12. We attach the roof so that a canopy forms over the notch. We drill holes for the screws and screw the roof.

After a year, the roof can be unscrewed to clean the birdhouse

13. The birdhouse is ready.

A birdhouse made of raw boards will merge with the bark of a tree and will not attract the attention of predators

Plywood birdhouse with gable roof

If there are scraps of a moisture-resistant laminated board, you can make a birdhouse out of it. However, due to toxic fumes from plywood, most likely, the house will only be a decoration in the garden.

Instruments:

  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • the drill is slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws;
  • drill bit with a diameter of 50 mm;
  • saw or jigsaw.

Materials:

  • plywood;
  • self-tapping screws.

Step-by-step instruction:

1. Draw a drawing.

A birdhouse with a gable roof is still better to make from boards

2. Mark the plywood and cut it.

3. Drill a notch hole on the facade with a crown. Drill a hole for the perch 4 cm below it. Make holes for self-tapping screws on all parts.

The house is assembled in the following sequence: facade, side walls, bottom, back wall, roof, perch, plank

4. Assemble the housing without the back wall.

5. Lay the structure down with the entrance, install the bottom and back wall, fasten.

6. Assemble the roof.

Holes for self-tapping screws are drilled in advance so as not to split the plywood when they are screwed in.

7. Insert the perch on the front.

8. If desired, glue the decor and paint.

Where and how to hang a birdhouse

The bird house is placed on a tree with a slight inclination forward, so that it is convenient for the chicks to get out of the nest. The letok is oriented to the south side so that cold winds do not blow inward. Hanging height - not less than 4 m above the ground. To prevent cats from getting to the chicks, increase the roof overhang by 5 cm from that indicated in the drawings.

Birds need to be protected from their natural enemies - cats.

To protect against feathered predators:

  • beat the notch with tin;
  • do not mount a perch on the birdhouse;
  • make an entrance under the roof itself.

Long overhang and lack of a perch are necessary protection measures against predators

To properly fix the birdhouse on the support, the slats are screwed to the back wall. For them, the house is tied to the trunk with a wire or synthetic cord.

To prevent the strapping from growing into the bark, a wooden or rubber pad is placed under it.

Do not nail a birdhouse to a living tree with nails. This causes him severe harm, especially during sap flow.

Pipe sections are driven into the ground, into which a pole with a birdhouse is placed.

If you decide to place a birdhouse on the roof of the house, do it with an eye on the cats. Attach the bird's "cottage" to a two-meter pin upholstered in tin. But the best place is under the roof overhang, you can under the ridge. Screw in a screw there, and screw a metal eye to the house. There should be no objects around that the cat can catch on.

For the strength of the fastener, the metal eyelet for the birdhouse should have a pear-shaped cutout

There should be an open space in front of the birdhouse for birds to fly up. Only tits love houses hidden deep in the crown of a tree. Usually they hang 1 birdhouse per 10 m 2 of the garden. If you place them more often, they will be empty.

Do not hang more than one birdhouse on a tree, birds will conflict

Decorative birdhouse from a plastic bottle

Birds very rarely nest in houses made of artificial materials. The so-called birdhouses made of plastic bottles are used only to decorate the garden and feed the birds.

Materials:

  • five-liter plastic bottle - 3 pcs.;
  • a strip of burlap;
  • perch;
  • glue;
  • paints;
  • leg-split;
  • branches.

Instruments:

  • knife and scissors;
  • marker;
  • brush.

Step-by-step instruction:

1. Cut out a notch at the top of the bottle.

The notch is easily cut with sharp scissors

2. Cover the area under the notch on the inside of the bottle with burlap.

Burlap is needed to make it convenient for the birds to get out of the bottle.

3. Under the 4 cm notch, make a cross-shaped incision for the perch.

4. Cut out the trapezoid tile template. Attach it to a two-liter bottle, circle with a marker and cut.

For cutting tiles, it is better to use bottles with a smooth surface, they are easier to glue.

5. Glue the shingles on top of the house in rows from bottom to top. You will need 3 rows.

In order not to wait a long time for each row of tiles to dry, you can use a heat gun

6. Paint the house: the roof is brown, the walls are white.

7. Paste the bottom of the birdhouse and the space around the notch with twigs. Insert a perch.
